The Business Owner’s Guide to Cash Flow Forecasting

Running a business without a forecast is like driving with your eyes closed. Stop guessing your bank balance and learn to predict cash shortages 13 weeks in advance.

Why Profitable Businesses Go Broke

In accounting, Profit and Cash are two different languages. You might "earn" $50,000 today by sending an invoice, but if the client pays in 60 days, you have $0 in the bank to pay rent tomorrow.

To survive, you must track Operating Activities—the actual day-to-day movement of dollars.

The Silent Killer: The gap between when you earn money and when you collect it.

How to Fix a Cash Crunch

If the simulator above showed a dip below zero, use these three levers to fix it immediately.

🚀

1. Accelerate Inflows

Get paid faster.

  • Offer 2% discount for Net-10 payments.
  • Enforce late fees on overdue invoices.
  • Switch to upfront deposits.

2. Delay Outflows

Keep cash longer.

  • Ask vendors for Net-60 terms.
  • Pay bills on the due date, not before.
  • Negotiate payment plans for big purchases.
✂️

3. Cut Variable Spend

Reduce the burn.

  • Pause non-essential contractor work.
  • Reduce inventory purchases temporarily.
  • Audit software subscriptions.

How to Use the Free Template

We recommend the "13-Week Model" because it strikes the perfect balance between accuracy and foresight. Follow these steps after downloading the file.

1

Configuration

Since the file is a CSV, add these formulas to Week 1:

NET CASH FLOW = Total In - Total Out
ENDING BALANCE = Start + Net Flow
2

Link the Weeks

Set Week 2's "Starting Balance" to equal Week 1's "Ending Balance". Drag this formula across all 13 columns.

3

Populate Collections

Enter cash when you expect to collect it, not when you sell it. Use an Invoice Aging Tracker for accuracy.
